Introduction

Information plays a vital role in modern economic markets, and is critically important to business success. The rise of the information economy has and will continue to have important implications for the survival and growth of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). Correspondingly, such a development has also made the role of government in disseminating information to SMEs one of the key economic policy issues facing governments across the world.

This paper will briefly discuss some of the issues associated with SMEs in the information economy. This will encompass:

• the increasing importance of information to SMEs;

• the information requirements of SMEs and to barriers to acquisition of information; and

• the role of government in disseminating information to SMEs and suggestions on how this can be enhanced.
